Dear Mani: I had been off the list for a while this summer and was going
through some of the discussions--just a quick glance actually. Someone had
asked for the source of 'ahimsA paramo dharma" and I wasn't sure if a later
post had given it. (It may well have; if so, trash this message). If I
remember right, it is AnuSAsana parva 115.1. However, this precept has
really been the hallmark of the Jain tradition (there are numerous
exceptions, of course) and they sometimes begin their books/talks with this
line. It probably enjoyed a pan-Indian popularity at one time.
Best wishes, Vasu
