The bangle ceremony is also accompanied by an anointing of
the mother-to-be with flowers and herbs by several sumangalis
or married women. The flowers are placed in the hair of the
prospective mother so this is known in Tamil as pU-cUTTal.
In addition, the women take turns and rub some herbs on the
prospective mother's back, presumably to help ensure a safe
delivery. I'm not sure how much detailed knowledge about
the practical significance of these rites has been transmitted
to this generation.
