shri shridhar's doubt was-why don't we wear a shirt while performing pujas?
to adiyen's limited knowledge, it appears that no upper cloth is worn
during worship,as a mark of respect to the deity being worshipped. even
while visiting temples, we normally remove our shirt or uttareeyam and tie
it at our waist, as a mark of humility. and specifically, a shirt is not
worn during vaidika karmas, as it is inconvenient. especially, in karmas
which require changes in the manner of wearing the sacred thread (niveetam,
prAchInAvItam, etc.) it would be impossible to change the YagyOpavItam from
one mode to another, if one is wearing a shirt. even to this day, vaidIkAs
never wear a shirt, whatever be the occasion. adiyen came across some
pramANam prohibiting wearing of a stitched shirt, but am unable to recollect
the same offhand. more significantly, even women were not wearing stitched
upperware in the days of yore, but used to cover themselves with their
saree, which was long enough for the purpose...... dasan, sadagopan.
