Dear Bhagavathas,

We all know that Veda adhyayanam is on the decline
nowdays. But the neglect seems to be more pronounced
among our community. In many places there are very
few veda adhyapakas among our community.Very few
children are encouraged to take up Veda adhyayanam.

Sometime back in february this year
i happened to attend the Southern Regional Vedic
Conference .This conference was inaugurated by
H.H.Vanamamalai Ramanuja Jeeyar Swamigal from
Naguneri.Although there were many adhyapakas and
pundits from chennai and North India,it was very
difficult to spot Veda adhyapakas among the Sri
Vaishnava Community. The paTasala had around 18
children lerning vedas of which only 2 were from
SriVaishnava families.

In our community probably there are very few
paTasalas and in some places like Srirangam
it is taught 'privately' to a group of students
in the thirumaaligais. These are also very few in
number.

Our azhwars have stressed the importance of
Veda Adhyayanam.Periyazhwar in one of the verses
says the day(s) when he does not do Rig,yajus sama
veda parayanam are the days of fasting for him.

Even with all this why there has been so much
neglect and decline of importance to Veda
adhyayanam in our community?

As we are engaged in our own professions
it is very difficult to devote our time
to vedic learning but among the earlier generation,
i have met many people who in their
30's or 40's took some time to learn some basic hymns
like pancha sooktham,Shikshavalli etc from qualified
adhyapakas though they were in professions like
law,Engg,Medicine etc.

At this rate we may not have bhagavathas to
chant basic hymns during thirumanjanam in future!!
