Dear SrImAn Sadagopa Iyengar:

Regarding your posting on Acamanam, I would like to know the proper procedure for sipping the water in the cupped palm. Should this water be taken with the head in a raised position (similar to the way our elders take water from a tumbler, without the lip touching the tumbler), or should the water be sipped with the head in a bowed position (where the lip touches the palm, and one can say that the hand should be washed after performing the Acamanam because of the contact with the lip)? One friend of mine indicated that the water should be sipped with the head bent and with the lips in contact with the palm, but the hand should not be washed afterward. I sincerely appreciate your clarification, with the pramANa-s if available.
