SrimathE RaamAnujAya Nama:

Dear BhakthAs:

In the fifth paasuram of TVMN , MM salutes
the Souseelya GuNam of the Lord :

" vaLamikka Maal Perumai mannyurin taNmai
  uLamuRRngu oodurava ohrnhtu --taLarvuRRu
neenga ninai MaaRanai Maal Needalalahu SEELATTHAAL
  paangudanE sErtthAn parinthu "

(Prose order): VaLam mikka Perumai mann uyirin taNmai
uLam uRRu angu ooduruva Ohrnthu taLarvuRRu neenga ninai
MaaRanai Maal needu ilahu SeelatthAl parinthu paangudanE
sErtthAn .

(meaning):Swamy NammAzhwAr thought deeply about his
lowliness and the Lord's majesty (greatness) and his unfitness
to approach Him . Propelled by that overpowering feeling of
his Naicchiyam (lowliness) , Maaran wanted to leave the side of
the SarvEsvaran ,who is the possessor of all Isvaryam as
Ubhaya VibhUthi NaaTan . The Lord recognized the discomfort
and anguish of MaaRan and befriended His dear Bhakthan MaaRan
and embraced him tightly with great affection as a result of
His Souseelya GuNam.

(uyir Karutthu:
***************
"Needilahu Seelam" or expansive Souseelya GuNam
of the Lord , which makes Him approachable by
even by KrupaNAs ( poor, wretched , helpless
and undeserving people). He is Suseelan and His
display of Souseelyam out of His Krupai for
the lowly is a dhivya GuNam of the Lord .

Comments
*********
In the previous pathikam , Swamy NammAzhwAr was
driven by the PrEma for the Lord and out of His
separation anguish (viraha tApam ), he sent the AchAryAs
( Different birds ) as his messengers to the Lord to be
united with Him. The Lord responded and joined with
MaaRan. Now, MaaRan began to reflect on the greatness
of the Lord and his lowliness and experienced Naicchiyam
and unfitness to recieve such a soubhAgyam of Kaimkaryam
to Him . The mood shifted from PrEmai and longing to
the dawning of Jn~Anam about the Souseelya GuNam of
the all powerful Lord and His DayA. EmperumAn sensed
this discomfort on the part of MaaRan and with great
affection and removed the feeling of lowliness of Maaran
by tightly embracing Him .MaaRan celebrated the great
Souseelya GuNam of the Lord and saluted Him with choice
passages in this Pathikam .

************************************************
In the first two paasurams of this Thirumozhi, Swamy
NammAzhwAr expresses his lowliness and unfitness to
approach the most majestic Lord:

1.5.1: " I am a deadly sinner . Because I am now full
of grief ; grief has its origin in sins; the sins that
I have committed is this love , I cherish for the Lord.
He is the prime seed for this whole universe; He is
the Lord of this and the other world. This love made me
lose my thoughts of His charming qualities. Then I called
Him by names that connote His exploits . I referred to
His stealing of butter and to His killing of seven bulls
to win the hand of Nappinnai of sweet smile. Can I do these
things? Now I regret , my body yields and fails in abject
dejection " ( Dr.V.N.VedAntha Desikan's translation of
the naicchiyam of Swamy NammAzhwAr).

1.5.2: Swamy NammAzhwAr continues here with the expression
of his lowliness to come near the Lord and wishes to wander
away : "--Your amzing feats , the might of your (Lord's)
free will (Sankalpa) --these are so great that it makes
little difference , whether it is for I or the DevAs.
All (of us) are thoroughly unfit to come near You .
The material aids we bring are all Yours and propriety
precludes those efforts. Why speak of others? I am unfit
for You and have to wander away " (Dr.VNV"s Transalation).

1.5.3: To detain AzhwAr from moving away from Him ,
the Lord reenacts some of His enchanting leelais
and AzhwAr is overcome with the enjoyment of
the adhi-adhbhutha Souseelya GuNam of the Lord
and raptourously eulogizes the Lord with splendid
words: " yella aRivukkum sEyOn ; yellA uyirkkum
ThAyOn ; ohr uruvanE" ( Oh Lord ! You are beyond
the comprehension of even the most astute intellects
with great Jn~Anam. The combination of Your Parathvam
(supermacy) with soulabhyam baffles all understanding.
You are the Mother of all chEthanams. Your AakAram
and Svaroopam does not undergo any changes as a proof
of Your Souseelya GuNam ).

1.5.4:" MaamAyan Vaikunthan EmperumAn ": The Lord of
great and mysterious Mayaa is Our Lord , who is revered
as Vaikuntan or Sri Vaikunta NaaTan.

1.5.5: "VaanAr sOthi MaNi VaNNA ! --nee aruLAi thEnE malarum
ThiruppAdham --" : Oh Lord of the most resplendent blue hue
filling all the ParaAkAsam ! Please bless me to reach Your
honey-flowing sacred feet out of Your extraordinary gunam
of Souseelyam!

1.5.6: "VinayEn vinai theer marunthAnAi": Oh Lord! You
became the medicine for my deluded mind , which wanted to
run away from You , the abode of Souseelya GuNam !

1.5.7: " sedi aar aakkai adiyArai sErthal theerkkum
ThirumAl": Oh Lord who destroys the vinais (sins) ,
which are the cause for birth in samsAram with sarIram !

1,5.8: In the above paasuram, Swamy NammazhwAr lamented
about his lowliness again and expressed his longing
to see the Lord ( ThirumAlai kaaNpAn adiyEn alaRRuvan).
The Lord comforted the AzhwAr through the display of
His stealing of NavanItham in Gokulam. AzhwAr is
ovecome with the joy of the enjoyment of the unparalleled
souseelyam of the Lord.

1.5.9: Here the exhilirated AzhwAr breaks out into a rhapsody
of salutatons for the Lord :

" MaayOm--Maayan VaanOr Tanittalaivan MalarAL Mainthan
yevvuyirkkum , ThAyOn TammAn YennammAn AmmA Murthiyai
 SaarnthE "

(Meaning): Our Lord is the Lord of Nithya Sooris; He is
the Lord of MahA Lakshmi and is forever young (Nithya YuvA).
He is the Mother of all chEthanams. He is my dear Master.
If we approach Him and surrender to Him , we will never
ever be caught up in the cycles of births and deaths.

1.5.10: In this Paasuram, Swamy NammAzhwAr elaborates
on the blessings of those , who peform saraNAgathi at His
sacred feet: " Maayam paRRu aRuthtu theernthu tann paal
manam vaikka thirutthi veedu thriutthuvAn" ( When we cut asunder
our attachments to transient things and get the conviction
that Isvaran is the PrApakan and PrApyan ( means and goals),
then He will make our minds rooted in Him , who is
the most enjoyable nectar and remove our remaining
imperfections and get us qualified to enter Parama Padham.

Thus concludes this beautiful Fifth pathikam of
the First Centum of ThiruvAimozhi summarized
in a crisp manner by Sri MaamunigaL Needu ilahu
SeelatthAl parinthu paangudanE sErtthAn).
