From the Bhakti List Archives

srimathE rAmAnujAya namaha:

As per the Lord Krishna's defenition in the Bhagwad Gita
the moment we start working in exchange for money
we are not a Brahmna.

So almost all of us in the US earning a living in exchange for
our labour our not Brahmins.
Just because we are born in a family, who were born in a family
.... of Good Brahmins, we are calling ourselves of the same caste.

How many people in any given gOshti, (including Divya Deshams)
are truly Brahmins.

Some people will want to let this one go, with the explanation with
times things need to change. (i.e allow Brahmins to work in exchange for
money.)

Still there are so many Nityanushtanams that a brahmin should do:

- ThriKala sandhya (VVVVV basic to do)
- Samhita Danam (Most single srIvaishnava Brahmins will ask what it is
today, there is a equivalent for married brahmins)

the list goes on........

Varna & Ashrama dharma is a very effecient system only if followed.
In the present day and society, about 90% of Brahmins are for name sake
only. (They would not stand upto any qualifications or qualities)

(The above is my limited understanding on the subject, please correct/add
with quotations)
