Dear Shri Srinath:

This is adiyEn's interpretation.  When you are doing the previous day's 
sayam sandhya in the morning, you can face north and do it.  The arghyam 
should always be oferred facing the sun.

Also in all the samkalpams (for arghya pradAnam, Gayatri japam etc.,) it 
won't hurt to add poorvEdyu:) just like you do with the pradhAna samkalpam.
