Dear SrI Pradeep:

Here is a brief response to your question. I have only given
high-level meanings based on SrI parASara BhaTTar's interpretation.

-Krishnamachari

rAmah: a) He who delights others.
       b) He in whom everyone delights.

virAmah: He before whom all become powerless.

SrI BhaTTar has explained the nAma as follows: viramyate asmin
varapradaih brahmAdibhih, varaiSca avadhyAdibhih, labdha-varaiSca
rAvaNAdibhih iti virAmah - Before rAma all become powerless, including
the likes of brahma
who grant the boons, the boons themselves of indestructibility even by
death, and people like rAvaNa who acquired the boons by their
austerities. He quotes rAmAyaNa in this context - brahmA svayambhUh
caturAnano vA ...
(Sundara kANDa 51.45), where hanumAn advises rAvaNa to understand
rAma's prowess.

bhayakRt: He creates fear in those who transgress His mandates given
through SAstra-s.

bhaya-nASanah: He destroys fear in those who are guided by, and who
obey, the LordÂ’s mandates.

guNa-bhRt – The Supporter of all that are subject to Him – sarvasya
vaSi sarvasya ISAnah – He to Whom everything is subject, and Who is
the Ruler of everything” is what is indicated here.

nirguNah – guNa-s like sattva, which are linked with prakRti, are not
in Him. The worldly-associated guNa-s are not in Him. Even though He
is in contact with everything, He is not tainted by anything.

>>Dear Sirs

>>I would like to know the interpretation of these Namas, which come
>>one after other but are in exact contrast to one other. But when
>>properly interpreted they also convey the same meaning.

>>I am referring to :
>>1) Raamo-Viraamo
>>2) Bhaya Kruth - Bhaya Naashana (causing fear, destroying fear)
>>3) Guna brun - Nirguno Bhavaan (full of Gunas, devoid of Gunas)

>>Pradeep
