According to the 44th Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt, one should simply
chant Krishna Krishna all the time (I guess to begin with this means
as often as possible).  This itself will get one to do Saranagathi
(and understand what that means).  For those who have done
Saranagathi, chanting Krishna, Krishna all the time will quickly
dissipate all sins and bring untold happiness in this life and
Paramanandam in Sri Vaikuntham after this life.  Of this there is no
doubt.

Following Acharams can be detrimental to one's spiritual progress if
one does not know what one is doing, e.g Ramanujacharya's wife.
