Re: the significance of avatars

Dear Sir,

Time and again our Poorvacharyas have maintained that two reasons for
God's Avatharams are 1. Sadhu Samrakshanam(Parithranaya Sadhunam) and 2.
Dhusta Nigraham.

However, out of the two above reasons, Reason 1, ie Sadhu Samrakshanam is
more importanat. Best Example is Narasimha Avataram, he could have finshed
off Hiranya Kasipu, just by his sankalpam. However, he wanted to make the
words of his Pure Devotee Prahalda true, that he is everywhere, that
prompted the Lord to manisfest.

Similarly, KRishna himself says that he had earlier resolved that all the
duryodanas are dead. This does not need a Kurukshetra war, yet, out of his
compassion to the human race, he wanted to give sarama slokam , by way
being born. Swami Pillai Lokachar says that Sri Mahabharatahm talks of
"Dhootu ponan etttram' ie, talks of greatness of the messenger'.. This
shows Lords Sowlabhyam,(or Neermail In Tamil) who is all prevelant and all
powerful, yet does a lowly jobs like messenger, charioter , freind etc for
those whom he love, Pandavas.

Thanks

KM Narayanan

Subject: the significance of avatars

The scriptures mention that God assumes various
manifestations from time to time to protect
"virtuous people".Also the Bhagwad Gita says..
yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati
bharaata
           abyuthanam adharmasya tada atmanam srjamyaham
           paritrnaya sadhunam vinashaya cha dushkrutaam
           dharma samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge
my question is why should Lord come down to punish the
"evil" ?
Can't he do it from vaikuntam itself..by his mere
sankalpa?
I hope someone will throw light to my question.
regards
