Shankranti/Pongal

There are many differences in opinion as to why people celebrate Shankranti or 
Pongal. From what I know it has something to do with the harvest season but I 
really don't understand its significance.

Can someone please clarify this? 

I am sure there are many different ways to go about it and would like to hear 
them.
