Parasu-Rama Avatara precedes Rama-Avataram.
I think, the purpose was to punish the egotistic 
Kshatriya Kings and to prove the powere of Rishi-marga.
I felt the Avatara was mainly for the redemtion
of the Dwar-palakas, cursed for human sufferring from
their Nitya-suri status. Kamsa was one such.
May be one of the Purana experts can correlate the
names, starting from Hiranyaksha(?), -- Ravana, Kumba-
Karna.
