Just a remark on the comments of Sri Mukund and Sri Ramachandran.

I was perusing the notes and comments from gItA JyOti of Sri Chinna Jeeyar SvamikaL. It is a gathering on a large scale. But when done on small scale with opportunities for discussion, it is a retreat. /tirup/pAvai can be a retreat during the month of /mArkaZi. A retreat gives time and scope for introspection, which is /maDi. I think in /tirup/pAvai, the concept of /maDi is prominent, because the group is to take a bath and get purified physically followed by active introspection (manadinAr cindikka) and then also to worship with flowers. The lines in /pAcuarm 5 are full of the /maDi concepts.

The emphasis is also on small groups, not kumbha/mElA type that is built into /maDi. So wde can revive /maDi with positive inputs by combining a period of introspection in groups. People in /maDi usualy perform /japaH, but may not actively bring to consciousness (/cindittal) the meaning. That is why an /acAryaH becomes crucial --- some kind of spiritual leadership.

So what we need to do is to add a weekly retreat (/maDi) during /mArkaZi reviewing that week's pAcuarms. Something similar on /gItaH should also be tried.

/vantanam.
