The reason for Garuda being called Periya Thiruvadi is because heis
the eternal vahanam for Perumal. As you know, Hanuman was Sri Rama's
vahanam and that too only on certain occasions. Garuda, on the
otherhand was Perumal's vahanam in all his Manifestations.

Therefore he is refered to as "Perumai mikka sttthi" which roughly
translates to one who is worthy of greate praise. Hence Garuda got the
name Periya thiruvadi and Hanuman got the name Siriya thiruvadi.

Garuda worship is more prominent in southern parts of India and is
event more so shoth of Srirangam. On the other hand hanuman worship is
more prominent in North India (because of the popularity of
Ramayanam), with the exception of Nepal, which celebrates a festival
known as Garuda Naga Yuddam.

In the south the festival Naga Panchami is also celebrated as the
avathara day of garuda.

The above is my limited understanding, and I request other learned
members to add to or correct it.
