Tradition of "unchavrutti"

Friends,

Can somebody please briefly explain the tradition of
"unchavrutti" w.r.t:
a)its Vedic roots,
b)the need for it, 
c)its history,
d)its practice and prevalence in ancient and modern
Indian society, 
e)why not only "yati-s" but even brahmin householders
were enjoined to observe it,
f)whether women like "avaiyAr" or St.MeeraBai also
practised it and 
g)why present day "yatis" do not practise it at all in
the real or virtual sense?
