I may have been incorrect in saying that the jiva
takes 13 days to attain Vaikuntha after death.
A friend informs me that the jiva's ascent to Brahma-sayujya
via the path of light may be immediate, or beyond
our notions of time. The belief is that the funeral
rituals are still performed because there is a
pitr-devata who will be around (not the dead body's
jiva but a different being) to accept offerings
made by the survivors and hence it is obligatory
for them to do so. I will see if I can confirm
this and get you the full story.
Thanks
Mani
