AnushtAnam

Since this mahAn was so popular among his sishyas and
admirers alike, he was fondly called as periAndavan.
For a long time he was residing in Srirangam . In a
month, He would go to devout and pious Srivaishnava
bhAgavathAsÂ’ thiru mAligai on selected seven to eight
days for unccha Vritthi . He would take the grains to
the banks of Coleroon river, wash them in the river
water, cook them and eat the bhagavath prasadham
along with thulasi leaves. On other days, he used to
powder the dry leaves fallen from the Holy Fig tree
and consume the same. Such was his VairAghyam.

Sishya paramapara

Upon Lord RanganathaÂ’s command to take disciples,
and disseminate and propagate the Philosophy, several
persons became His Disciples, and became erudite
scholars and preceptors. Some of them were

1)	Thirupputkuzhi Appa
2)	Mannargudi Gopalanna
3)	Vyakaranam Rangachariar
4)	Meemisal Narasimhachariar
5)	Chinnamu Rangachariar
6)	Thirunelveli Gopalasamudram Narayanachariar
7)	Shamala Chakravarthi and
8)	Purisai Nadathur Rangachariar.

One of His disciples from the village of Anbil bought
a land on the Southern banks of Coleroon river in a
place called Melur and offerred it to Srimath
Periandavan. Swami accepted it and had a hermitage
constructed, where he stayed and rendered
Kalakshepams. The same place still exists even today
and is called periAsramam.

Rendering of KAlakshEpam

Swami used to render Sri Bhashyam (including srutha
prakAsikA and bhAva prakAsikA) for 4 months , Geetha
Bhashyam for one and half months, Srimath rahasya
traya sAram for two and a half months followed by Sri
bhagavath vishayam for 4 months. This way he would
complete rendering kAlakshEpams on the grantha
chatushtayam within a year. Like Swami Desikan, He did
this for THIRTY number of times.

SwAmi was known to be a very strict disciplinarian. He
commanded sishyAs to strictly adhere to certain norms
such as coming to the Asramam only by walk, performing
 oUpAsana-vaIswadEva-bhagavath ArAdhanam daily at
their grahams to name a few. It is said that in the
morning, when he took the texts in Cadjan Leaves for
Kalakshepam, whatever may be the number of pages,
whatever may be the time span, He would not rise from
His seat, without finishing all the pages. Such was
the discipline he followed.

Due to becoming a sanyAsi at a very young age and
performing severe penance with very little consumption
throughout, swami became very lean and emaciated and
became to be also called as “Vathal swami”. Swami was
in dureeyAsramam for FIFTY years completing that many
chAturmAsyams.

Swami also covered lots of places in Tamilnadu and
Karnataka during this time and stayed in a place
called HembikAi in Mysore for a long time. During his
yathrA, He performed samAsrayanam and bharanyAsam to
devout bhAgavathAs.

swAmi attained ThirunAdu at the age of 85 leaving
behind grieving disciples in the year 1886.
