Munitraya sampradaya has been serving as the beacon
light of sri vaishanavism since the time of great
acharya of this siddhAnta, Sri Gopalarya Maha Desikan
also known as Thirukkudandhai Desikan about 300 years
ago. This illustrious lineage was started by one of
Thirukkudandhai DesikanÂ’s disciples by the name of
Srimath Vazhutoor Andavan Sri Vedanta Ramanuja Maha
Desikan also known as Srirangam Swami.

The second Acharya to adorn the peetam of this
illustrious Asramam was Sri Srinivasa Ramanuja Maha
Desikan also called as Thirutthuraipoondi Andavan who
took the dureeyasramam from Srirangam Swami.. He
hailed from a small village called ViLakkudi next to
Mannargudi in Tanjore District. This Acharya belonged
to bharadwaja gothra and Eyunni parampara. He stayed
in Srirangam throughout his sanyasAsramam.

Thirutthuraipoondi Andavan gave sanyas to Sri
SrinivasaRaghavachariar Swami who went on to become
one of illustrious Acharyas of Munitraya Sampradayam,
and unparalled among His contemporaries. This mahAn
later came to be known as the famous Srimath
Periandavan.

Younger Days of Srimath Periandavan

SrinivasaRaghavan was born in the year 1801 in the
holy place of ThirukKacchi on the auspicious
thirunakshatram day of Pushyam in the month of Masi.
At a tender age of 10, he mastered rendering Sama Veda
learnt from his father, Sri Krishnamachariar which was
considered to be an invaluable wealth in his family
traditions. Sri Krishnamachariar took his 10 year old
son to Thirukkudandhai where they stayed in
Navalpakkam Sri. RaghavachariarÂ’s thirumaligai. Sri
Raghavachariar did not fail to notice the young boyÂ’s
prowess and very much enjoyed the melodious rendering
of his sama ganam. He realized the boy was a genius
and shared his awe very much with his father.

Education

When the time came for Sri Krishnamachariar to leave
Thirukkudandhai with his son, Sri. Raghavachariar
requested him to leave the boy in his place where he
offered to teach him SAstrAs. Sri. Krishnamachariar
also decided to do it that way and went ahead with his
yatra alone. When he came back to Thirukkudandhai
after three months, the SrinivasaRaghavan by then had
finished learning KAvyAs in that short time span .As
Azhwar proudly says “ Enna Nonbu NOrrAL kolO ivanAip
perra vayirudaiyAL” Sri Krishnamachariar made all
efforts to make his son learn and become an authority
in all that he learnt at such an young age.
