RE: Silk and cruelty....

Dear Sri Vijay / Members,

To answer the question bluntly, it is wrong, whichever way one slices it.
Having said that, I also hasten to add that it is purely a social practice
with no religious backing, influenced by the Chinese (seri) culture and
brought to India only around 300 AD.

Thus, as in any custom there are several inconsistencies in ours too - but I
feel this should not come in the way of experiencing a rich and wonderful
religion that is Sri Vaishnavam.

||" Of creatures I am the beginning, and the end, and also the middle, O
Arjuna. Of sciences I am the science of self. Of those who argue, I am the
fair reasoning" || Sri Krishna - Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 10 Verse 32.

 adiyEn,
Sriram

Subject: Silk and cruelty. Re: time to give up milk even in India?

Dear Members,

Adiyen wants something clarified that has been nagging
my brain ever since I was very young.

Silk, is made from worms (mulberry silkworm) and the
same silk is used to adorn the lord. I have seen the
process of making the silk, where in the cocoon is
boiled so that the strands of silk may be extracted.
are we right in doing this? Is this not a curelty
toward those worms? If it is cruel, then how are using
the same silk to adorn the lord and ourselves?

The learned members of the group please let me know of
the answers.

Om Namo Narayana
vijay.
