Post 24

Dear Sri vaishnava prunthagaiyeer,

Continuing the sthuthi of my krishNa with the words of wives of kaaLiyan the
snake, the next naama is "Om upadhrashtrE nama:" - meaning is - prostration
to you, oh lord the great onlooker [a witness, a spectator]. There is no
similar naama in SVSN. This is a special address by these ladies.

Earlier they said kaala avayava saakshinE nama:. There also a witness, here
again a witness. That too this naama is following the naama Om visvaaya
nama:, the creator also is a witness for happenings in all those creations,
he is within , out, and also a witness. A classic way of addressing that
krishna, the lord supreme.

The next naama is Om karthrE nama: - meaning- prostration to you, oh,
creator.

There are two naamaas in SVSN. Naama 317th Om karthrE nama: - He who slays.
Continuing his interpretation of the sequence of naamas as describing
parasuraama incarnation, Sri Bhattar interprets this naama as referring to
the slaying of kaartha veeryaarjunan.

Sri Sankara gives the meaning that the lord is the karthaa or Creator of the
Universe - kriyatha ithi karma jagath thasya karthaa. Sri Sankara gives the
interpretation for 316 and 317 as individual nAma-s, and also suggests that
the can be considered as one nAma together - krOdha-kruth-karthaa - One who
destroys those who demonstrate anger viz. the asuraas.

382nd naama Om karthrE nama: - The Agent. In this instance Sri bhattar's
interpretation is that bhagavAn is the Agent who causes others to act. Sri
chinmayaanandha refers to paaNini the grammaraian and says - he is
svathanthrah karthaa - One who freely and independently performs the
functions of creation, protection and destruction, is the "Doer". He is
karthaa because without Him, the mere existence of the pancha bhoothas etc.
could not have resulted in the Universe, just as the presence of clay etc.
Without the presence of a pot-maker, it could not have resulted in the
creation of a pot.

Even though the jeevaathmaas may think that they are independent in their
acts, nothing functions without His Will - avan anRi Or aNuvum asaiyaadhu.
BhagavAn is the only svathanthra karthaa - One who acts independently of
everything else.

Here tiruvAimozhi 5.6.4 comes to the help to establish -
"seikinRa kidi ellaam yaanE enRum
 seiyyaa ninRanagaLum yaanE enRum
 seidhu mun iRandhavum yaanE enRum
 seiyap payan uNbEnum yaanE ennum
 seivaargaLaich cheivEnum yaanE ennum .....

Oh, bhakthaas, see the way these naamaas are linked. First witness for time
and its components, next creator, again spectator - next creator. Class- see
the clarity in their thoughts- hey, krishna, you are the creator also a
witness for what is happening without really getting involved in these. This
clarity will come for yogees only, which already exists with these ladies.
Oh great.

Subsequent naama is Om visvahEthavE nama: meaning- prostration to you, oh
lord, on account of you this visvam the world exists. There is no direct
naama reference in SVSN. That way these naamas are specials.

The next naama is also another special. Om bootha maarthrE nama: meaning -
prostration to you, oh, mother of all elements or creations- the direct
reference is not there in SVSN. but "om visvayOnayE nama" referred earlier
can be taken- meaning- oh lord, you are the mother or the womb for all
creations.

When I just discuss naamaas of krishna, a krithi of annamaacharya comes to
my mind and in the front. Here it is- this krithi is in the raaga senchuruti
in carnatic style [or jenjoti in hindhusthaani music style]
